PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fusion-splice optical fibers which differ in mode field diameters to each other by fusion splicing with low connection loss by using discharge electrodes. SOLUTION: The splicing end surface side of a 1st optical fiber 2 and the splicing end surface side of a 2nd optical fiber 2 are arranged oppositely, a high voltage generated by the couple of discharge electrodes 3 is applied to the splicing end surface sides of the 1st and 2nd optical fibers 2, and the splicing end surface sides of the 1st and 2nd optical fibers 2 are heated, fused, and spliced with a high voltage. When the mode field diameters of the 1st and 2nd optical fibers are different from each other, the optical fibers are spliced, so that the straight line B connecting the electrode tips of the discharge electrodes 3 and the straight line A connecting the splicing end surface axes of the 1st and 2nd optical fibers 2 cross each other at right angles as shown in (a), and then the straight line B and straight line A cross obliquely at an angle other than 90 deg. as shown in (b), and the heating area of the optical fibers 2 is expanded, the optical fibers 2 are heated, and the core dopant diffusion of the optical fiber is carried out. |
