PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the telephone set by which the user can retrieve a telephone directory and select a retrieved name with a simple operation without consuming much time. SOLUTION: The telephone set has a storage section 18 that stores in advance an opposite name and its telephone number in cross reference with each other and an operation section 19 consisting of a plurality of keys to which different characters are assigned. When key depression of the operation section 19 for a prescribed time or over is accepted, a name including the characters assigned to the key is retrieved from the storage section 18, the retrieved name is displayed on a display section 20 and selected. When the key operated for the retrieval is further depressed, a name next to the name having been displayed is selected.
