PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform faithful color reproduction even when color image data are binarized while suppressing the storage capacity of a buffer for storing a binarization error. SOLUTION: A color correction part 17 outputs a prescribed value of 8 bits corresponding to the value of binary image data binarized in a cmyk(cyan, magenta, yellow and black) binarization part 7. By the subtraction of the value and multilevel image data before binarization, binarization errors are obtained. The binarization errors of a color relating to image formation are stored in a line buffer 21 for one line and those of the other colors are stored in latch circuits 22-24 for one picture element. Error weighted suming parts 25-28 use the binarization errors, use a diffusion mask of 2×5 for the ones of the color relating to the image formation and a diffusion mask of one picture element for the ones of the other colors, diffuse the binarization errors to multilevel image data of peripheral picture elements and correct the errors.
