摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the necessity of a rubbing process, to improve mass production, to reduce price, and to improve display performance by forming a level difference between every two column or two row of pixels at least on either one of two substrates forming a pair. SOLUTION: A reflection type active matrix substrate 1 to be a 1st substrate is constituted of active elements 2, pixel electrodes allowed to be used also as reflection plates, a wiring layer constituted of a signal wiring for driving the elements 2 and a wiring for electrically connecting the electrodes 3 to the elements 2, a protection film 5, and an orientation control film 6 which are successively formed on a single crystal silicon substrate. A counter glass substrate 7 to be a 2nd substrate consists of a transparent electrodes 8 formed on a glass substrate and orientation control films 9 and a liquid crystal layer 10 is held between both the substrates 1, 7. The transparent electrodes 8 on the glass substrate 7 are previously patterned by a photoetching process, slits are formed for every two pixel and the two substrates 1,7 are combined so that these slits are superposed between pixels 12.
