PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smooth only characters, graphics, etc., in a multilevel image without affecting a natural image. SOLUTION: A binarizing circuit 3 binarizes multilevel image data read out of an image memory 1 into binary image data consisting of bits each for a pixel. In this case, pixel values are so binarized that 255 corresponds to a value '1' and 0 to 254 correspond to a value '0'. Consequently, only characters and graphics are binarized to '1' and a natural image is binarized almost to '0'. An area of, for example, 8×9 pixels of this binary image data is put in a register 5 and image elements having the value '1' are smoothed according to the binarized data of the 8×9 pixels in the register 5. The drawing signal obtained by this smoothing processing and a drawing signal obtained by a half-toning processing are ORed to obtain a final drawing signal. |
