This invention relates to the methodology of using genomic data derived from microbial DNA sequencing projects for the determination of the stage-specific expression and subcellular localization of proteins. Genomic sequence data is used to produce individual DNA vaccines designed from open reading frames or entire protein encoding genetic elements and are introduced into animals (i.e. mice) in order to produce antibodies directed against the encoded protein. The resulting antibodies are used to identify the stage specific expression of the protein immunofluorescence antibody testing or other means and to characterize the pattern and character of the protein expression from the microorganism. Further, this invention relates to the use of this methodology for the development of antimicrobial vaccines and drugs.
