The printed image is formed on a medium, photoelectric remission signals are measured and the offset of registration marks in a defined direction are derived. The control strip (6,7,11) comprises a continuous and non-constant remission characteristic which satisfies a mathematical rule. Two parallel control strips may be provided in the printing direction.
