The illumination device includes a source of light which is preferably a filament lamp (32) or LED in a lamp holder (34) on a printed circuit board (20). It is centred at one focus (F1) of an ellipsoidal or paraboloidal reflector (40) forming a ring of light around an opaque object (10) containing the drive (12) for the pointer (14). The ring of light is collected by a dial (54) with transparent or translucent zones printed on the front face of a transparent plastic panel (52) and forming a scale centred on the axis of rotation (16) of the pointer.
