PURPOSE:To produce an ethylene copolymer in good efficiency, by copolymerizing ethylene with an (alpha-substituted) acrylate ester in the presence in a Lewis acid by using a catalyst comprising a specified V-containing component and an Al-containing component. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene is copolymerized with an acrylate ester and/or an alpha-substituted acrylate ester in the presence of a Lewis acid by using a catalyst comprising the following vanadium-containing compound (A) and an aluminum- containing component. As said vanadium-containing component (A), a reaction product obtained by reacting a vanadium compound with at least two mol, per mol of the vanadium compound, of an electron-donating compound is used. Although the reactionfor obtaining component A can be performed also in the absence on any solvent, it is desirable in order to obtain a particularly high-performance catalyst component to use a solvent from which the reaction product can be precipitated. |
