PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To check and improve the composition quality of a graphic including characters by editing a composition checking graphic and an edition graphic in a state arranging the composition checking graphic. SOLUTION: When an operator specifies the arranging direction of composition checking characters and composition checking characters to be arranged, a CPU 1 accesses character data from a specified file stored in an external storage device 9 through a DKC 8 and stores the accessed data in a RAM 3. Then data conversion processing for arranging the composition checking characters on right and left sides is executed and data conversion processing for arranging the composition checking characters on upper and lower sides is also executed. The display positions of editing characters, characters to be arranged on the upper side and characters to be arranged on the lower side are determined by a prescribed format based on composition information data stored in the RAM 3. Then the contours of characters accessed for checking the composition are displayed on a CRT 7. Then the displayed contours of character data are edited.
