A method of quantitatively determining the average compositions of oxide inclusions and the oxygen concentration in a metallic material, such as steel, in a short time only by using an emission spectrophotometer, comprising (1) causing electric discharges between the metallic material and a counter electrode in an inert gas atmosphere to obtain emission spectra, (2) selects electric charges resulting in that at least one of the oxygen spectrum and the oxide-constituting element spectrum has an intensity stronger than a predetermined value, and (3) subtracting the background from the intensities of the oxygen spectra and/or the oxide-constituting element spectra resulted from the selected charges and summing the remainders to obtain the intensity of the sum spectrum, thereby to quantitatively determining them by using a working curve.
|
