A semiconductor produced for use as an optoelectronic element contains a group IV semiconductor. Production of a semiconductor comprises: (a) preparing a substrate (1) or substrate layer (4) of a first semiconductor material containing a group IV semiconductor; (b) depositing a second semiconductor material on the substrate (1) or substrate layer (4) to form growth islands (2), in which the second semiconductor material has a lattice constant different to that of the first material; (c) growing a covering layer (3) of third semiconductor material on the growth islands (2); and (d) carrying out (a)-(c) at least once.
