A method and apparatus for generating simultaneously displayable, multiple color shades for use in raster scanned, digital color display devices such as RGBI digital color monitors, driven by digital computers. Using a conventional digital color graphics system (Fig. 1), the phosphor excitation time of an individual pixel on the screen of a digital color monitor (111) is selectively reduced so as to darken the color shade compared with the full period excitation shade of that pixel. Parallel pulse width modulation (110) is utilized on each color control line and the intensity control line to provide such reduced excitation in "real time". Two implementations are discussed, using a high frequency clock (109) and digital display lines (Fig. 15). In the first case, for a "K" times dot clock, for "c" input lines of a digital color monitor, (2K + 1) (c+1) colors are logically possible and can be simultaneously displayed on the screen (211). In the second implementation, for "p" equally time delayed taps of the digital delay lines, (p + 2) (c+1) colors are logically possible and are simultaneously displayable.
|
