DNA encoding a chemokine, Beta R1, comprising the Beta R1 promoter

The invention provides a chemokine designated Beta R1, whose production in T cells, astrocytes, a fibroblasts is preferentially induced by IFN- beta as compared to IFN- alpha . A cDNA encoding the Beta R1 polypeptide and comprising the endogenous Beta R1 promoter is described. When coupled to a reporter gene, the promoter sequence may be used to screen for mimics of IFN- beta activity.
