PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition with high water resistance even in the case of being subjected to drying/heat treatment at relatively low temperatures, and having no problem such as the viscosity stability of its aqueous solution, by including a vinyl alcohol-based polymer containing silicon atoms in the molecule and a zirconium compound in specified proportions. SOLUTION: This water-resistant composition comprises (A) a vinyl alcohol- based polymer containing silicon atoms in the molecule and (B) a zirconium compound (e.g. zirconium sulfate) in the weight ratio A/B of (99.99:0.01) to (80:20), wherein the component A is pref. a polymer having respective structural units of formula I [R<1> to R<3> are each H or a 1-8C hydrocarbon group; R<4> is a 1-40C (substituted) alkoxyl or a (substituted) acyloxyl; (n) is 0-4; (k) is 0-2; (m) is 0-3, wherein (k+m)<=3; X is a monovalent metal or H] and formula II (R<5> is H or a 1-8C hydrocarbon group; R<6> is a 1-5C alkylene or a bivalent organic residue with the carbon atom chain interrupted by oxygen or nitrogen atom). |
