PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an optically active alcohol having a high optical purity and useful as an intermediate, etc., for synthesizing medicines by asymmetrically hydrogenating a β-keto acid derivative using a specific complex as a catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) A β-keto acid derivative represented by formula I [R<1> is a halogen, hydroxy or the like; R<2> is OR<4> (R<4> is a 1-8C alkyl) or the like; R<3> is H, a halogen, a lower alkyl or the like] is asymmetrically hydrogenated using (B) a new ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex represented by formula II (R<8> -BINAP is represented by formula III; R<8> is a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy or the like) as a catalyst to produce the objective alcohol represented by formula IV. Furthermore, the component B preferably has one or two doublets having a value of δ within the range of -1 to +12 ppm according to a<31> P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (<31> P-NMR) and the component B is preferably a ruthenium-iodine-optically active phosphine complex having 66-81 ppm value of δ. |
