PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the life of a printing head by a method wherein a position to be controlled and printed and a kind of the controlling are preset at a side of a host together with discrimination information such as a size of a paper, a bar-coded form number by each medium to be operated and the discrimination information is detected when the medium is inserted, then controlled printing is executed. SOLUTION: On a controlled printing data registration window 250, information for identifying a kind of a medium to be operated such as a paper width 251, a paper length 253, a form number 255 and so on is inputted. A bar-coded form number which is printed on a predetermined position on the medium is read by moving a form edge sensor on the bar code in the right and left directions. A specific record in a controlled printing data table is identified by the recognized number and the printing is performed in accordance with a controlling content designated by the record. The desired controlling and printing is executed on a desired portion so that an operator does not need to change the setting every time when the kind of the medium is changed.
