PURPOSE:To obtain a rubber composition having excellent productivity and processability and giving a vulcanized product having excellent mechanical properties, by kneading and extruding an ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer rubber, short fibers of a polyamide and a coupling agent at a temperature above a specific level. CONSTITUTION:(A) 100pts.wt. of an ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer rubber (preferably having a Mooney viscosity of 5-80 and an iodine value of 4-30) is compounded with (B) 2-100pts.wt. of fine short fibers of a thermoplastic polyamide (preferably short fibers having an average diameter of 0.05-0.8mum and fiber length of 10mum and made of nylon 6, nylon 66, etc., having a melting point of 180-260 deg.C) and (C) 0.2-5pts.wt. (based on 100pts.wt. of A+B) of a coupling agent (preferably silane coupling agent, etc.). The mixture is kneaded at a temperature above the melting point of the component B and extruded to obtain a reinforced rubber composition wherein the short fibers of the component B are embedded in the component A and the component A is grafted to the polyamide of the component B at the surface of the short fiber via the component C. |
