The invention refers to an internal combustion engine, with opposed or in-line pistons, designed to equip means of transport, as well as various equipment, either stationary or mobile. According to the invention, the engine has some connecting rods (6) provided with some arms (a and b) connected to the pistons (3). The coupling/uncoupling of the independent crank-shafts (4 and 5) is made by means of a mechanism (7) for the coupling and synchronising of the independent crank-shafts (4 and 5), which is activated by a control mechanism (8) by means of a microprocessor (9). The independent crank-shafts (4 and 5) drive the camshafts (10 and 11) by means of some drive mechanisms (12 and 13).
