PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the small-sized, low-priced distance measuring instrument which can photodetect both light information from infinity and light information reflected by a detected body at a short distance. SOLUTION: This instrument is a triangulation system and consists of a projecting element 10 which projects light on the body to be detected through a projection lens 12 and a photodetecting element 13 which photodetects reflected light from the object body through a photodetecting lens 13. In this case, the photodetecting element 11 is arranged obliquely at a tilt angleαso that the side which is far from the projecting element 10 advances to a surface Q in a base length direction.
