The method involves using a device with tracks, which are short-circuited as the steering column is turned. The arrangement of short-circuited tracks is determined, to deduce the steering wheel position. The method involves establishing, as a function of the device's position, a contact between a second end of the device (10) and a predetermined group (A-G) of conducting tracks. One track (1) is electrically supplied and the others (2-4) are not, in the absence of contact with the device. The contacts are electrically supplied by short-circuiting the whole of the connected tracks. Each track is measured to determine if they are supplied electrically, and the predetermined assembly of tracks in electrical contact is deduced to determine the position of the device. An Independent claim is included for a device to carry out the method.
