摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device reducing a decrease in transmittance and also being excellent in visual angle characteristic. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal panel, and at least one of which hold liquid crystal LC between a pair of SUB1, SUB2 which are arranged to oppose each other and at least one of which has a group of electrodes for picture element selection and at least another is transparent substrate, polarizing plates POL1, POL2 laminated on the liquid crystal panel so as to control a quantity of light transmitted by changes in the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules composing the liquid crystal layer LC occurring by impressing a voltage on the above-mentioned electrodes, an illumination light source BL for illuminating the liquid crystal panel, and a driving circuit means for impressing a voltage waveform on the above-mentioned electrodes according to display signals. In this case, the liquid crystal layer LC is subjected to an alignment-treatment so that the visual angle dependency of transmittance in the vertical and horizontal directions in a state in which the liquid crystal panel is being used is asymmetrical and further the direction of the maximum contrast or brightness is different from either of the vertical and horizontal directions, and a double refraction medium sheet PDS is laminated on an outer surface of one of the substrate pair SUB1, SUB2 so that the maximum contrast or brightness is in the vertical direction and also the visual angle characteristic is symmetrical in the horizontal direction.
