PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium in which the long wavelength output and the overwrite characteristic are improved without deteriorating the short wavelength output characteristic. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 1 is constituted by forming a magnetic layer 3, which includes a magnetic powder, on a nonmagnetic supporting body 2. In the magnetic powder, the amount of the saturated magnetizationσs [Am<2> /kg] and a coercive force Hc [kA/m] satisfy (2.74×σs-Hc)>=260 and Hc>=150. In the magnetic layer, a magnetic flux density Bm [mT] and its coercive force Hc [kA/m] satisfy (0.917×Bm-Hc)>=280 and Hc>=160. The thickness of the layer 3 is set to be 0.06μm to 0.20μm.
