PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable high-precision judgment, by causing a direction detecting template for each separate direction for performing pattern matching with a specific pattern to perform pattern matching with a picture image of a corresponding electronic component individually, and deciding the direction of a direction detecting template of the highest degree of matching around the site of the electronic component. SOLUTION: Pattern matching of each direction detecting template A1-A4 for a separate set direction, with a picture image 21-24 comprising a specific pattern P on an input picture image of an electronic component 1 corresponding respectively is performed respectively, and the direction of the electronic component 1 is judged by the direction or position around the center position O of the electronic component 1 of a direction detecting template A1 whose degree of matching is the highest.
