Trifluoromethane is prepared by the pyrolysis of bis(difluoromethyl) ether, F2HC-O-CHF2, at 300-500 deg C (preferably 350-400 deg C). An Independent claim is included for the preparation of bis(difluoromethyl) ether by contacting carbon monoxide with an excess of anhydrous HF at 1-200 (preferably 20-100) bars and 0-200 (preferably 15-150) deg C.
