The invention relates to a stabilized calcium carbonate filler, to a process for stabilizing calcium carbonate, to its use in a paper producing system, and to an improved paper producing process in which calcium carbonate is used as filler. The invention relates, in particular, to a process by which the dissolution of calcium carbonate in an aqueous slurry is retarded as compared with a conventional paper producing process due to carbon dioxide being introduced into the slurry in order to lower the pH of the slurry below 8.0.
