A system for the treatment of excreta, which is technically and functionally valid and is easy and quick to produce, requiring only simple materials. Its cost, which is the main advantage, makes it possible to imagine a large-scale installation. This system is only a provisional solution in the medium term (5 to 10 years) for improving the living area and promoting toilet hygiene, which can only succeed if it is incorporated in a health education programme. The latrine consists of a plate of reinforced concrete 3, with a hole in its centre, on which is positioned a concrete cylinder 2, inside which is introduced a glass fibre siphon 1. This latrine is installed above a conventional septic tank having three compartments 5, consisting of used drums around which is cast a concrete casing 6 providing for the leakproofness of the assembly and a guarantee of no pollution to the environment. On top are positioned two protective plates 4 made of reinforced concrete in order to provide complete protection. <IMAGE>
