A rainwater filter (1) consists of a funnel-shaped basket (25) with a tubular down-pipe at its base and an upright rim (21). The funnel basket accommodates a filter insert (10) which is a matching inverted truncated cone (10) touching the funnel wall (30) at its outer edge. The interface between the circular tip of the filter insert (10) and funnel wall (30) allows for capillary water flow between the two. The filter insert (10) describes an angle of preferably 47 degrees at its base and has a mesh pore size of approximately 100.
