An antifouling agent which comprises (A) 0.05 to 30 wt.% nonvolatile resinous ingredient, (B) 0.05 to 30 wt.% at least one nonvolatile oxide ingredient in sol form selected among silicon oxide sols, aluminum oxide sols, antimony oxide sols, zirconium oxide sols, tin oxide sols, and titanium oxide sols, (C) 1 to 50 wt.% organic solvent, and (D) 40 to 99 wt.% water, wherein the resin of ingredient (A) has a solubility parameter of 10 or higher and is insoluble in water at 25 ~C; a method for antifouling treatment which comprises using the antifouling agent; and an article obtained by the antifouling treatment. The antifouling agent can be applied to a base without the need of an exclusive apparatus, and is effective in easily hydrophilizing the base surface to impart excellent fouling resistance thereto. The method for antifouling treatment can easily impart excellent fouling resistance to a base. The article has excellent fouling resistance.
