Paper (or like sheet material) is transported past an ink-drop printing station by an electrostatically charged continuously recirculating member (eg a belt), the paper being held to the member by static attraction. The ink-jet nozzles may be capped when out of use, and are initialised and maintained by periodic periods of ink flushing between printing operations. The waste ink generated thereby (and also ink mist produced during printing) is attracted to the charged portions of the belt which are not covered by paper, and the belt is cleaned before being recirculated. <IMAGE>
