The drive mechanism is for an overhead engine camshaft. It comprises a gear train (2,4,5) and a parallel belt drive (3,7,8) with a different velocity ratio. The difference between the ratios is between 0 and 2%. The belt drive can be at the opposite end of the crankshaft (1) to the flywheel (11), while the gear drive can be taken from any point on the crankshaft. USE/ADVANTAGE - IC engine camshaft drive prevents backlash between gears and consequent noise.
