An absorbent structure in the composite material has an absorbent layer(3) which is impregnated on at least the side facing the foodstuffs. An Independent claim is made for the flexible composite material with one or more absorbent layers, of which at least the food facing layer is impregnated to resist fluid. Preferred Features: An absorbent layer(4) is created by doubling a woven or knitted fabric band and a dispersion adhesive applied and allowed to disperse into the porous structure in a holding zone(6). The coated absorbent layer is then combined with a pre-impregnated absorbent layer(3) and the structure consolidated by passing through pressure rolls(11) which produce point and/or linear seams by cold embossing. The bond between layers is insoluble in water. The impregnation forms a fluid repellent surface.
