Telephone system with digital transmission path and analogue subscriber lines

The system includes subscriber terminals which have at least one subscriber apparatus providing a voice signal and at least one subscriber apparatus providing a data signal. Analogue subscriber lines are provided between subscriber terminals and digital transmission paths are provided between the telephone exchanges. The analogue transmission channels on the subscriber lines can be used for voice or data transmission. Signal compressors (DK) are provided which are switched off when a signal is received indicating data transmission. Preferably, the compressors are part of subscriber connection units (TSCH). The connection units are joined using concentrators.
