A device for accurately detecting an engine intake air volume based on an air volume passing through an air flowmeter in an internal combustion engine provided with a variable intake air control mechanism capable of varying the operational condition of an intake air control valve for controlling a flow of intake air into a combustion room. A throttling ratio is reduced according to the operational condition of the intake air control valve when a volumetric efficiency is lowered to calculate a throttling ratio so as to increase a throttling level. An engine intake air volume is calculated by throttling an air flowmeter passing air volume based on the obtained throttling ratio. A volumetric efficiency is calculated according to, in addition to the operational condition of the intake air control valve, an engine load and an engine revolution speed to calculate a throttling ratio based on the calculated volumetric efficiency.
