The spray device is used to apply a metallic paint to a conductive surface, using an electrostatic and/or pneumatic spray gun providing a spray cone (8) directed onto the surface, with an air stream directed parallel to the latter. A second air stream is directed around the outside of spray cone, to provide an unsymmetrical spray one configuration (7) with separation of the larger and smaller paint droplets. The coated surface is move relative to the spray cone so that the small droplets are deposited on the surface before the larger droplets.
