Prepn. of a gaseous fuel for gas or gas-oil engines comprises de-gassing the carbonaceous material in a fluidised bed using air or oxygen enriched air at 750 to 1100 deg.C. and 1 to 3 bar, followed by de-dusting and cooling the gas. The novelty is that the dust containing gas is initially coarse de-dusted in at least one cyclone, cooled to 250 to 600 deg.C., fine de-dusted using a filter to a dust content of less than 10 mg/Nm3 and cooled to 70-100 deg.C..
