A longitudinally extending channel is embedded in a (typically sloped) driving surface which is subject to snow or ice conditions. The channel is covered with a multiple-aperture grating. The grating apertures are sufficiently small to permit unimpeded passage of vehicle tires over the grating, and sufficiently large to permit the vehicle tires to force snow or ice accumulated above the grating apertures through the apertures and into the channel as the tires pass over the grating, thereby improving traction between the tires and the grating. Snow or ice forced through the grating into the channel is accumulated within a cavity enclosed by the channel and the grating. The channel preferably extends continuously along substantially the entire length of the driving surface. As snow or ice forced through the grating into the channel melts, the resultant water is removed from the channel by a pump or other suitable drainage means. A pair of parallel grating-covered channels can be embedded in the driving surface, the channels being spaced apart by a distance corresponding to typical transverse vehicle tire spacings.
