The device has a wiper unit with shaft holder (30) fastened to the vehicle body (3). The shaft holder has a cylindrical bearing part (31) with a pivot shaft (20) turnably held in it. A wiper arm (12) is fastened with its base end to an outer end part of the pivot shaft. A wiper blade unit with wiper blade is connected to a free end of the wiper arm. A holder element (23) between pivot shaft and bearing part prevents an axial movement of the shaft relative to the holder part. The holder fractures or deforms to permit an axial movement of the shaft into the bearing part, when an axial force acting on the shaft exceeds a set value.
