PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively inhibit emission of unburnt HC, CO to the atmosphere at the time of low temperature combustion by adjusting the heat absorbing quantity of gas in the periphery of fuel at the time of combustion in a fuel chamber, and restraining the gas temperature of fuel and its periphery at the time of combustion in the combustion chamber below such a temperature that growth of hydrocarbon is stopped in its course. SOLUTION: When an engine 1 is operated, the gas temperature of fuel and its periphery at the time of combustion in a fuel chamber 5 can be restrained below such a temperature that growth of hydrocarbon is stopped in its course only when the engine load is low. In the low load operation region, soot is not generated regardless of the air fuel ratio, so that the quantity of generated NOx is a very small. Accordingly, in the low load operation region, a first combustion (low temperature combustion) for restraining the gas temperature of fuel and its periphery at the time of combustion below such a temperature that growth of hydrocarbon is stopped in its course is performed, and when the engine load is comparatively high, a second combustion (normal combustion) is performed. When the engine is started and the catalyst of the catalytic converter 19 is not activated, an electric current is applied to an electric heater to activate the catalyst early. |
