A process for purifying a fluid stream contaminated with carbon dioxide is provided which comprises contacting, under conditions sufficient to substantially remove the contaminated carbon dioxide from the fluid stream which contains at least one C2-C5 olefin such as ethylene or propylene, with a composition containing an oxygen-containing metal compound such as, for example, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide. The contacting is carried out in the presence of water.
