PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the concentration of an exhaust gas of an engine and lessen the dioxins generated in a combustion furnace by radiating ultraviolet rays with specified intensity to a photocatalytic object containing aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide as main components and optically activating oxygen brought into contact with the object. SOLUTION: Air is passed through an alumina-silicate powder containing aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide as main components while ultraviolet rays being radiated at 0.5-2.5 m-W/cm<2> . Oxygen brought into contact with the object is optically provided with energy and gotten in the activated state. The activated oxygen efficiently carries out combustion and, as a result, the amount of an exhaust gas can be decreased. An exhaust gas can almost permanently be decreased by installing an apparatus employing such a method in a suction inlet of an engine or an air intake of a combustion furnace. Moreover, in the case the powder is attached to the cigarette holder side of a tobacco, the amounts of tar, nicotine, and cancer-causing substances in the sucked smoke can be lowered. |
