PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the carbon monoxide removal performance of the device and the service life of a fuel cell and also to reduce hydrogen consumption, catalyst cost and catalyst maintenance cost of the device by selectively oxidizing carbon monoxide without using any expensive platinum-based catalyst liable to be poisoned with carbon monoxide, in the treatment. SOLUTION: In this treatment, a small amount of air or oxygen 7 is added to a hydrocarbon-reformed gas to be used at a fuel for a fuel cell and then, the resulting gaseous mixture is passed through a packed bed 3 consisting of alumina pellets 2 in a specified temp. range to selectively remove carbon monoxide in the mixture, wherein each of the alumina pellets 2 is provided on its surface with a copper oxide thin film contg. an alkali based compound(s) consisting essentially of sodium oxide by means of firing. |
