PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high speed ink jet printer in which staining due to rubbing between pages or smear is avoided without sacrifice of print speed. SOLUTION: In the apparatus and method for determining an optimal print density of an ink jet printer 130, an optimal print density is achieved using the characteristics of the printer 130 and peripheral parts thereof (ink jet print head 120, ink supply unit 110, and the like). The printer 130 receives a print command from a computer 100 and stores ink drop quantity parameters, read out from the printhead memory 121 of the ink jet print head 120, in the printer memory 135 of the printer 130. A processor 131 in the printer 130 determines an ink density compensation value for the ink jet print head 120 based on the ink drop quantity parameters and generates a gap print command by applying the ink density compensation value to the print command. Finally, the gap print command is printed. |
