PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtainβ-naphthalenesulfonic acid useful for the composition of a sulfonation reaction mixture preferable asβ-naphthalenesulfonic acid useful for an intermediate for various kinds of chemicals, especially as a raw material for a cement dispersant. SOLUTION: This method for producingβ-naphthalenesulfonic acid comprises sulfonating naphthalene with a sulfonating agent such as concentrated sulfuric acid in an inert gas atmosphere under 0.5-10 kg/cm<2> G. In this case, the amount of the sulfonating agent used is 1.2-1.4 times 1 mol of naphthalene.
