The present invention relates to a method for operating a multiple-fuel two-stroke internal combustion engine. According to the signal from an oxygen sensor arranged in the exhaust system, a control unit outputs signals for modifying the displacement characteristics of the piston independently from the crankshaft rotation and, at a given moment in the cycle, the piston closes the bypass and exhaust windows. According to a signal from the control unit, the method involves displacing the tilting axes of levers that offset the pivots of the articulated connecting-rods of the pistons towards the cylinder axes, which accelerates the closing of the bypass and exhaust windows by the piston during the ventilation step.
