The invention relates to a method for the mass-spectrometric on-line determination of the oxygen isotope composition of a sample. Using the inventive method, the delta <18>O-values of both organic and inorganic samples can be rapidly determined, precisely and correctly. The invention also relates to a novel pyrolysis reactor and to an elementary analyser containing said pyrolysis reactor.
