The gas generator (2) has a main chamber (6) containing a main explosive charge (11) detonated by an electrical detonator (12) and at least one auxiliary chamber (7,7a) containing an auxiliary explosive charge (13a-e). A control device (9) receives collision data signals for controlling a drive (8) for positioning the auxiliary chambers relative to the main chamber, so that the auxiliary explosive charges can be detonated by detonation of the main explosive charge.
