Adaptive coding of image signals containing texture and contour information

Image signals that include a texture (L20) and contour (L10) signal have the background pixels replaced with a derived value (210) to create a padded texture signal (L30), the luminance data from this signal is extracted (220) and used together with the contour signal to determine whether there is more correlation between the frame or the field of the image (230). An Independent claim is included for the method to be used in an apparatus for adaptive coding of an image signal with contour data.
