PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst useful for hydrogenating treatment of a petroleum raw material containing a specified proportion of Ni or Co oxide and a specified proportion of Mo oxide, in which a Mo gradient of the catalyst is less than a specified value, the specified proportion of Ni or Co can be extracted with an acid, and a total surface area, a total fine pore volume and pore size distribu tion of the catalyst are maintained at specified values. CONSTITUTION: A catalyst has 1.0-5.0 wt.% of Ni or Co oxide and 10.0-25.0 wt.% of Mo oxide, all of which has an Mo gradient, that is, an atomic ratio of inside and outside Mo/Al of the catalyst pellets, it not more than 6, it has such a form that 15-30% of Ni or Co can be extracted with an acid. The catalyst has a total surface area of 150-210 m<2> /g, a total pore volume of 0-50-0.75 cc/g. The catalyst has such a pore diameter distribution that fine pores having a diameter not more than 100 Å occupies not more than 25.0% of the total fine pore volume in the catalyst, fine pores having a diameter of 100-160 Åoccupies 70.0-85.0%. and fine pores having a diameter not less than 250 Åoccupies 1.0-15.0%. |
