A system and method are shown for providing accounting for the collection of monies in a plurality of independently operated transaction stations (110). Each transaction station (110) is provided with a uniquely identifiable secu re cashbox or vault (111) in which to store monies received in a transaction. T he transaction stations (110) include electronics sufficient to validate, verif y, and tally received monies. The transaction stations (110) record information with respect to the received monies as well as the identification of the cashbox (111) into which it is stored. The transaction stations (110) are probed (503) upon removal of the cashbox (111) in order to download the recorded information into a control system (507). The removed cashboxes (111 ) securely contain the received monies until opened in a secure environment fo r emptying. When emptied, the money contents are independently verified and matched with the unique identification of the cashbox (111) from which it came. Thereafter, the probed information from the transaction station (110) is compared against the information with respect to independent verification of the cashbox (111).
